With some air conditioning coil units, the coil fins are made of aluminum and the tubing is made with copper. With this type of system, the two different metal types increase the corrosion process. Trane has developed a process called Spine Fin Coils whereby both the coil tubing and fins are made of pure aluminum. This may seem obvious, but the construction of this type of system took many years to develop and the corrosion process is greatly minimized.
So whats the difference? In science class, if you were paying attention, there is an electrical process created when different metals come in contact with each other, which causes corrosion to take place. Trane’s “Spine Fin” coils are 5 times more corrosion resistant than copper / aluminum coils made by other firms.
